Corn Dogs with Mina Halal Chicken Wieners & a Spicy Cajun Honey Mustard Sauce + a Giveaway!

I had never thought that I would ever try making corn dogs at home. They seem like such a classic fair food and I am not usually one for deep frying things. However, recently at the Halal Food Fest my older daughter wanted to try one and was unable to because they weren’t ready in time. She did however sample and really enjoy Mina Halal Chicken Wieners so when the opportunity presented itself it only made sense to put the two together.

These Chicken Wieners are part of Mina Halals new line of products and are available at Fresh Co locations in Ontario. The other products are Chicken Bologna and Chicken Strips. Mina Halal sent us the wieners and strips to sample and the Chicken Strips were also a big hit at one of our recent breakfast for dinners i.e. ‘brinners’. To say these were a hit would be an understatement, my daughter wanted to know if she could have them for every meal for the rest of her life. You can probably guess what my response was 😉

Corndogs with a Spicy Cajun Honey Mustard Sauc

I loved the idea of having something more interesting than ketchup to dip these babies into and the Cajun Honey Mustard Sauce totally hit the spot. The Serious Eats piece where the recipe comes from mentioned the idea of serving these for brunch and I think if I were to do that this is how – drizzled with some sauce, sprinkled with minced chives. Yum yum.

Disclaimer: I received free product samples along with a gift card. However,  the views and opinions expressed are my own.

Corn Dogs
Makes 10

1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup yellow cornmeal
1 heaping teaspoon baking powder
2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon finely minced scallion or 1/4 of an onion grated
1 large egg, beaten
1/2 cup milk
10 Mina Halal Chicken Wieners
4 cups canola oil
10 heavy 8-inch wooden skewers

Whisk together the dry ingredients (first five). Combine the next three in a small bowl and whisk to mix well. Fold the wet into the dry and stir. Let it sit at room temperature for 25 minutes.

Heat 2 inches of oil in a skillet. Skewer each hot dog stopping 1 inch from the top and pat with a paper towel to ensure they are dry. This will help the batter stick to the wiener. Pour your batter into a tall glass (I used my magic bullet cup) to make it easier to coat each corn dog. Use the stick to twirl the corn dog in the batter and coat it evenly. If it isn’t fully immersed then just tilt the cup to the side and twirl away. Feel free to spoon batter over ‘bald patches’. Now twirl the corn dog and shake very gently to get rid of excess.

Holding the stick end, lower the corn dog into the oil, keeping it suspended about 5 seconds before letting go (this will prevent the corn dog from sticking to the bottom of the pan). Dip 2 or 3 more hot dogs and add to the pan (do not fry more than 3 or 4 dogs at a time). Turn the dogs occasionally with tongs to make sure they cook evenly, and fry until the corn coating is a deep rich brown, 4 to 5 minutes. As you get near the end of the batter, you may need to spoon it over the dogs to coat them evenly.
