Hello hello my wonderful readers! I know I know, long time no blog. Sigh.
When I was expecting my second child a wise man told me that 1 plus 1 does not equal two. I didn’t get it at the time, but now I do. My very dear friend and blogger Henna of My Ninja Naan is about to find out the same. Congratulations Henna on the upcoming birth of Baby Ninja Two!
I know this is when I wax lyrical about what a great food blogger she is, but I am pretty sure if you hop over to her blog (go now) then it will speak for itself. What you may not get from reading her blog is how incredibly supportive Henna is, she has talked me through many a stressful time and given me great advice when needed and for that I will be forever grateful.
So welcome to this surprise virtual baby shower for Henna. This virtual baby shower was the brainchild of Faaiza from Modest Munchies and I am thrilled to be part of it. We wish we were all a little closer so we could celebrate in person, but for now this is a happy substitute. The idea is simple, a few of us get together and make the things we would for a shower if we could be there in person, the only ‘guideline’ was that it be finger food.
One of the many things Henna and I seem to have in common is a love for spicy food. While I don’t know that any of us is a snacking on green chillies type, we do like food with a bit of a punch. So Henna I bring to you these spicy Buffalo Chicken pinwheels. They come together quickly and keep well making them the ideal thing to make for feeding a crowd. I hope you enjoy them as much as we do. Correction: did. I just checked and they’re all gone.

Pretty much every bakery in Karachi sells Palmiers or French Hearts. They are one of those things that I can rarely resist picking up when I am back in Karachi, but am frequently disappointed by. The thing is they are just a little… boring you know?
In one of my recent nostalgic moods I pulled out a sheet of all butter puff pastry from my freezer and looked around for inspiration. It came quickly in the form of two lackluster oranges lying in my fruit bowl. Remember the citrus sugar I had made for beignets? I zested the oranges, rubbed the zest into some granulated sugar, added a teensy bit of salt and wow, these were really good. The orange zest brightens the flavor of these flaky petite puff pastry treats and transforms them into something extraordinary.
They’re also really pretty (if I do say so myself) and would make great hostess gifts or a very welcome addition to the usual smorgasbord of Christmas cookies.
This past weekend I had my uncles and their families over for lunch. They were supposed to come around 1 and it was 1:15 when I realized that I had forgotten to make the tomato tart. 15 minutes later I was waiting for it to come out of the oven and despite the fact that I rushed the process a little it still turned out well.
The recipe is slightly adapted from Ten Dollar Dinners by Melissa D’Arabian and I have made it many times by now. It makes for an especially lovely summer lunch with a side of lightly dressed baby arugula and is equally good as a ‘snack’ on its own. I usually make it in a tart pan, but on one occasion when my tart pan had run away from home I put it out on a baking sheet and found that I quite like the effect.
You can switch the Parmesan out for goat cheese if you prefer. The mustard flavour is mild at best, my mustard hating sister (Yeah, I know, weirdo) enjoyed the tart and didn’t even know there was some Dijon action happening.
The tomatoes are clearly the star here so make sure you get the reddest most beautifully ripe tomatoes you can find!
